With its population of approximately 392,800, Tampa is the 3rd largest city in Florida and the 53rd largest city in the United States. Tampa is part of the metropolitan area most commonly referred to as the “Tampa Bay Area”. Its history can be recorded as far back as 1513 with the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon, but it wasn’t until 1824 that the U.S. Army established Fort Brooke to protect the strategic harbor at Tampa Bay. Since then, the military has had an ongoing role in Tampa's development and today the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command are headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, where CAE USA is the prime contractor for the U.S. Force’s KC-135 Aircrew Training System (ATS). – Source: Tampa History | City of Tampa and Defense & Security | CAE

CAE USA is the largest segment of CAE’s Defense and Security business unit, focusing on helping our defense and security customers develop and maintain the highest levels of mission readiness.
Luther Simjian, a lifelong inventor, held over 200 US patents. Renowned for inventing the automated teller machine (ATM), in 1939, Simjian founded Reflectone in Connecticut. He eventually moved the company to Tampa, FL, where in 2001 it was purchased by CAE USA.
During the Second World War, the Reflectone company pioneered and developed state-of-the-art training equipment for aviators, selling more than 2,000 Optical Range Estimation Trainers to the Department of Defense to aid in war efforts.
Designing and producing these complex training devices, Simjian believed was his most important invention of the era because of the many lives it saved. The trainer was used to help pilots identify different aircraft and determine their distance in speed, which was composed of miniature airplanes, synchronized moving mirrors, and controlled lighting. An instructor controlled the speed and distance of the model aircraft.
Today, our CAE Tampa location continues Luther Simjian's legacy by leveraging the full breadth of CAE's capabilities and technologies to design and develop simulation and training solutions that contribute to the preparedness of United States and allied warfighters.
After 40 years in our current facility, CAE USA has moved into a state-of-the-art facility that is located near the Tampa International Airport. The 290,000 sq ft campus-style facility consists of three buildings that are the hub of CAE’s operations, manufacturing and the CAE Tampa Training Center.
