CAE Healthcare announces that the opening panel at its Human Patient Simulation Network (HSPN) World conference in Orlando, Florida will address the impact of preventable medical harm and solutions for medical educators and practitioners. The panel discussion will focus on the “To Err is Human” patient safety documentary that was released to a wide audience in January.

“To Err is Human” features the personal story of the Sheridan family, who suffered medical harm and have since become advocates for change in the healthcare system. The filmmakers interviewed prominent patient safety advocates about the causes of preventable harm and the need for stronger patient advocacy and systemic change.

Since “To Err is Human” was released to limited healthcare audiences in 2018, more than 70 leading medical universities, colleges and hospitals have screened the film among practitioners to raise awareness of the need for a safer healthcare system. Transparency, data collection and simulation-based training for healthcare and professionals are proposed solutions.

CAE Healthcare will offer a screening of “To Err is Human” on Monday, February 25 from 5-7 p.m. at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld, followed by a Q & A session with Sue Sheridan and filmmakers.

On Tuesday, February 26 at 9 a.m. at the Renaissance Orlando, the keynote panel will focus on the impact of medical errors in an interactive discussion with HPSN World attendees, who are healthcare faculty, educators and clinicians. At 10:45 a.m., Sue Sheridan and her family will share their personal stories and answer questions. The keynote panelists are as follows:

Mike Eisenberg, the Director and Co-producer of “To Err is Human,”

Sue Sheridan, Director of Patient Engagement, Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine

Dr. Tara Bastek, a Neonatologist, Bioethicist and Chair of the WakeMed bioethics committee,

Dr. West Paul, Chief Quality and Medical Staff Officer at WakeMed Health,

Dr. Amar Patel, Chief Learning Officer at CAE Healthcare, who will moderate.

HPSN World 2019 will take place at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld February 26-28, 2019. With a theme of Inspired Innovation, the conference will include keynote speakers, panel discussions and more than 100 concurrent sessions and preconference courses about simulation-based healthcare education.

Established in 1996 to bring together early adopters of patient simulation for education, HPSN has since grown into a global network of forward-thinking educators, researchers and leaders in simulation. Anyone with an interest in healthcare simulation can attend and submit a session for consideration. www.hpsn.com
